You doubt whether what seems to be alive is truly alive, and conversely,

The reason why dolls are frightening is that they are models of human beings.  
That means they are nothing more than humans themselves.  
The fear that a human being might be nothing more  
than a collection of simple tricks in the mechanism of matter…  
In other words, the fear of the phenomenon of ‘human’ primarily arises from human vanity.  
Science, in trying to explain the phenomenon of ‘life,’  
has played a major role in the creation of this fear.  
The certainty that the laws of nature can be calculated leads  
to the conclusion that ‘human’ can be broken down into simple mechanisms.
