This commit is a combination of several previous commits,
squashed to produce a consise debian/patches.

It modifies build options to make test output deterministic,
then runs a simple test that compares that output to known-good
output.

Yes, that did involve making some tests of my own
This way, we test both english-to-latin and it's inverse

(The reason tests were failing is that certain
garbage gets added in unless you set certain variables in
config files we couldn't access)
