.SH NAME
pcap_activate \- activate a capture handle
.SH SYNOPSIS
.nf
.ft B
#include <pcap/pcap.h>
.ft
.LP
.ft B
int pcap_activate(pcap_t *p);
.ft
.fi
.SH DESCRIPTION
.B pcap_activate()
is used to activate a packet capture handle to look
at packets on the network, with the options that were set on the handle
being in effect.
.SH RETURN VALUE
.B pcap_activate()
40 41 42 43 44 45 46
returns 0 on success without warnings, a non-zero positive value on
success with warnings, and a negative value on error.
A non-zero return value indicates what warning or error condition
occurred.
.LP
The possible warning values are:
.TP
47
.B PCAP_WARNING_PROMISC_NOTSUP
48 49 50
Promiscuous mode was requested, but the capture source doesn't support
promiscuous mode.
.TP
51
.B PCAP_WARNING_TSTAMP_TYPE_NOTSUP
52
The time stamp type specified in a previous
53 54 55
.B pcap_set_tstamp_type()
call isn't supported by the capture source (the time stamp type is
left as the default),
56
.TP
57
.B PCAP_WARNING
58 59 60 61 62 63 64 65 66 67 68
Another warning condition occurred;
.B pcap_geterr()
or
.B pcap_perror()
may be called with
.I p
as an argument to fetch or display a message describing the warning
condition.
.LP
The possible error values are:
.TP
69
.B PCAP_ERROR_ACTIVATED
70 71
The handle has already been activated.
.TP
72
.B PCAP_ERROR_NO_SUCH_DEVICE
73 74 75
The capture source specified when the handle was created doesn't
exist.
.TP
76
.B PCAP_ERROR_PERM_DENIED
77 78
The process doesn't have permission to open the capture source.
.TP
79
.B PCAP_ERROR_PROMISC_PERM_DENIED
80 81 82
The process has permission to open the capture source but doesn't
have permission to put it into promiscuous mode.
.TP
83
.B PCAP_ERROR_RFMON_NOTSUP
84 85 86
Monitor mode was specified but the capture source doesn't support
monitor mode.
.TP
87
.B PCAP_ERROR_IFACE_NOT_UP
88 89
The capture source device is not up.
.TP
90
.B PCAP_ERROR
91
Another error occurred.
92 93 94 95 96
.B pcap_geterr()
or
.B pcap_perror()
may be called with
.I p
97 98
as an argument to fetch or display a message describing the error.
.LP
99 100 101 102 103 104 105 106 107 108 109 110 111 112
If
.BR PCAP_WARNING_PROMISC_NOTSUP ,
.BR PCAP_ERROR_NO_SUCH_DEVICE ,
or
.B PCAP_ERROR_PERM_DENIED
is returned,
.B pcap_geterr()
or
.B pcap_perror()
may be called with
.I p
as an argument to fetch or display an message giving additional details
about the problem that might be useful for debugging the problem if it's
unexpected.
113 114 115 116 117 118 119 120
.LP
Additional warning and error codes may be added in the future; a program
should check for positive, negative, and zero return codes, and treat
all positive return codes as warnings and all negative return
codes as errors.
.B pcap_statustostr()
can be called, with a warning or error code as an argument, to fetch a
message describing the warning or error code.
