Upstream has chosen a different way to avoid unaligned accesses, see
variable CMS_PTR_ALIGNMENT

More precisely, upstream used the more general approach described in
https://bugs.debian.org/644473, see strTo16() and strFrom16() in
src/cmsnamed.c.
