@tille, @plessy: how do you feel about taking the current snapshot of the file format description, with perhaps some minor improvements, and releasing that as a first version? Considering the number of packages that already ship the file, it seems like there's already a defacto standard.

Would it make sense to require that undefined fields have a "X-" prefix, to prevent clashing with any official fields that might be added in the future?

I'd like to take a look at which fields are actually used in the archive and see which fields are actually used in practice.

The reference field has a couple of "to be discussed" items. What should we do there?
