FreedomBox disconnected after power outage.

My Pioneer Edition Home Server has a battery, ment to resist power outages.

I recently experienced a power outage and my FreedomBox remained on. After recovering power the router went up again, but now the FreedomBox is not reachable:

  • It is not reachable at https://freedomBox.local anymore
  • It is not reachable via ssh @freebombox.local anymore (ssh: Could not resolve hostname freedombox.local: nodename nor servname provided, or not known)
  • It is missing in the router's web interface list displaying all connected devices.

Last time I solved this by unscrewing the box and unplugging the battery. But this hardware solution is quite fragile, as there's no switch and the connector is not design for frequent (un)plugging. There's a high risk of breaking a cable, scratching the board's printed tracks or damaging the device in any other way.

Obviously you can unplug the box and just wait for the battery to exhaust. It might take some hours, though, since the battery is designed to resist power outages. This requires time and twice physical access to the device (once to unplug and a second time to re-plug it). Not so bad if its only for personal use, but quite uncool if the box has many users or has been left working in another building.

Software features are needed to improve such situations. Something like checking the connection to the router every 15 minutes and triggering a DHCP/DNS request if connection is lost. I'm not expert in networking. The right solution might look very different from this.
