To set up your account with Thunderbird, first go to Settings Gear -> Account Setings -> New Mail Account. Set it up like this:

Note you put your full email address in the "Email address" field, but make sure the "username" field has ONLY the username as in this screenshot.
Click "Re-test" and then "Done".
You will get prompts to confirm security exceptions. You can confirm them because you are talking to another process on your local machine, not going across the Internet. Providing "real" Internet certs requires a lot more setup which you can do if you like, but is beyond the scope of this documentation. (You may prefer a TLS proxy like stunnel instead of doing it within the container if you go that route.)
