salsa.debian.org feels sluggish

Working with salsa.debian.org often feels sluggish. This seems to be consistent and reproducible with webpagetest.org, which reports a first render at 1.8 seconds on a GitLab.com page and 3.1 seconds on an equivalent salsa.debian.org page.

Sometimes salsa.debian.org is unusually slow, but I don't have any metrics to back that up. It does however seem that many DDs like me feel slowed down a bit by a slowly responding salsa.debian.org.

Is there something that could be done easily, perhaps have a bigger instance for running the website?

Perhaps people might provide as comments further insights about the issue. It might now be solvable with hardware upgrade alone.

What is the current status of the hardware Salsa is running on?

@lfilipoz Thanks for sharing me an update personally earlier. Could you also summarize here what is the status with Salsa hardware for the DPL and others to read? (assuming the amount and health of hardware running Salsa is not confidential)

@otto, @tille should know the specs since it was a purchase that required his approval (formally, it was pre-approved by his predecessor). At this point, The hardware is deployed, ganeti is running, and all the VMs (including the one for salsa) have been moved over.

@tille I'll resend the specs to leader@debian.org so they are at the top of that mailbox.

Could Salsa Admins post a summary here what is the status of the Salsa hardware/resources?

This is a shared concern for all DDs. There are hundreds of Debian Developers who use Salsa and several of them would surely like be interested to read an update/summary. It is good practice to post in bug reports info about how they were fixed in general too..

For (partially) sponsored hardware, it is good practice to coordinate a press-release with the sponsor such that they can derive some benefit from their sponsorship of Debian (by, for example, DPL's Bits containing a link to the press release).

The press release is coming (hopefully soon; I'll poke folks about it again next week). It may not have hardware specs but I'll wait for its issuance before writing anything more. I have sent leader@debian.org a summary.
