Packaging and template cleanups

This series include some packaging and template cleanups. Some are stylistic in nature, but the commit provides a rationale for the change reasons. Please let me know if any of the patches is not acceptable or perceived as controversial, and I can take it out, or split it into a different MR or similar for further discussion.
