Upgrade UX

In order to make the upgrade experience more smooth we should start addressing a set of issues:

• Settle on a single term, not dpkg specific "update/upgrade"
• move version status information to the module that handles auto-updates and manual update triggering
• create notifications for successful, and especially for unsuccessful update attempts
