Settle on a single term for "update"
There seems to be a list of terms that point to the same thing but are worded slightly different:
- Upgrade
- Upgrades
- Software Upgrades
- Update
- up to date
- unattended-upgrades
- automatic upgrades
- package upgrades
- upgrade packages
- ...
This list is too long. Despite all the intricate mechanisms that keep a FreedomBox running I think we should only put the burden on users to care about one concern: "Is my FreedomBox up to date?"
That is why I would suggest settling with "update" as the single term that should appear throughout all of the UI. In combination with the process behind the update would be the version number (of the plinth package) and the toggle/option called "auto-update".
So we can have phrases like this:
Your FreedomBox is up to date.
Your FreedomBox is being updated right now.
Your FreedomBox can be updated.
Your FreedomBox needs to be updated.
The latest update of FreedomBox is version 0.38
"package" for example isn't a concept a user needs to rely on, so we should try to avoid it altogether. Same is true for most of the terms mentioned in the list above.
I suggest replacing all occurrences of terms that can be replaced by update, auto-update, up to date & version X.XX
Are there hard feelings to turn down "debian-speak" in favor of maintaining a simpler concept? Does anybody see where this approach would not work?
