As a followup of my discussion with @hefee on bug report https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=897436 , here are the changes I've made for NMU 2.4.1+dfsg-1.1.

These will be the changes uploaded, except if my sponsor finds some really weird thing with them.

I will send the new nmudiff on the bug report.

As soon as the upload is done, I suggest you merge these changes. :)
