Fix wnpp-alert --diff and other issues

Paul Wise requested to merge pabs/devscripts:wnpp-alert-fixes into master

This fixes wnpp-alert --diff, which probably never worked. Also fixes some other issues. I would like to see these fixes in bookworm if possible and I think they are important enough and are safe enough.
